Introducing your baby to solids

I recently had a reader ask me for some help on when to feed her infant solids. Now you should always ask your child's pediatrician. But most Dr.s have about the same thing to say. Approximately 4 months-6 months.  The standard guidelines are to:

  1. Make sure your child can hold his/her head upright on its own.
  2. Being able to swallow the foods safely
  3. Significant weight gain. Your child is ready for solids when he has doubled his birth weight (or 15 lbs)
  4. And curiosity. When he starts reaching for what you are eating and wondering what you got :)
You will need to still feed his breastmilk or formula. AT LEAST 24 ounces daily. His nutrition will come from the milk not the foods.

**My dr said: Make sure you only introduce one food at a time. The same food every day for 1 week to detect allergies.**

And here is a link on what to feed at what ages: http://www.babycenter.com/0_age-by-age-guide-to-feeding-your-baby_1400680.bc
